Data Alliance - share, learn, get inspired

Two talks on Data

Graph Crimes - Carissa Typaldos
Making good data visualizations is hard, and many graphs you see in your daily life break common data viz laws. Through examples, let's learn what these are and how to avoid making the same grave mistakes.

How to lie with Statistics - David Božjak
Lies, damned lies, and statistics. First published in 1954, it feels that How to lie with Statistics is more relevant in today’s data-powered world than ever before. With great power comes great responsibility, and we know there is a lot of power in data; data-visualization even more so. Darell Huffel’s evergreen book teaches us how data (and visualization of it) can control the narrative, for good or evil. In this short talk we will take a look at a few key takeaways, and hopefully inspire you to read further in the book.

About Data Alliance
We believe that all views are equally important in our world, regardless if you’re a data engineer working your way through an obscure data model, a software engineer helping your fellow colleague understand the data generated from your application, or a product owner viewing product metrics. We therefore want to gather everyone into the Data Alliance to share their past and current struggles and/or solutions, no matter if they were successful or not. These experiences will spark illuminating discussions for everyone involved, especially the presenter.

Format:
A few presentations à 10-20 min and an open discussion with the audience after each one. There will be time for food and mingle somewhere in the middle of the event.

**This event will be live-streamed on YouTube, so anyone can watch it here: https://www.youtube.com/FooCafeOrgMalmo/live

Speaker:

Carissa Typaldos - is a product data analyst with a true love of data visualization. Working at Devoteam Creative Tech, she investigates user behavior, encourages clients to ask the right questions, and searches for hilariously terrible graphs on the side.

David Božjak - A developer turned manager, but always a relentless bookworm. Has been using c-style languages as a hammer everywhere from small startups to huge multinationals, then found a way to combine the passion for books with a satisfying management career. Very enthusiastic about Advent Of Code, Lund, Science Fiction and of course DATA.
